Rep. Ed Clere, R-District 72, has been honored as 2015 Legislator of the Year by the Indiana Bankers Association (IBA). The award was presented by Amber R. Van Til, IBA executive vice president, at the Association’s Annual Convention in French Lick, Indiana, on Sept. 15.

Rep. Clere was recognized for his support of legislation favorable to a strong business and banking environment. In the 2015 General Assembly, Clere sponsored Senate Enrolled Act 415, which addresses issues of vacant and abandoned housing. Among other provisions, the bill helps to eliminate unnecessary delays with the tax sale process, thus moving abandoned homes more quickly into the stability of homeownership. The bill was signed into law in May.

Throughout his four terms of service in the Indiana House of Representatives, Rep. Clere consistently has supported legislation that promotes economic vitality. SEA 415 is the latest initiative in a series of measures Rep. Clere has championed to reduce blight and strengthen communities.

Rep. Clere chairs the House Public Health Committee and serves on the House Education and Public Policy committees. He is a legislative member of the board of Indiana’s CHOICE program, a state-funded program that helps seniors and people with disabilities stay in their homes. He is also the legislative member of the board of the Indiana School for the Deaf.

Rep. Clere is active in regional and national organizations, including the Council of State Governments (CSG). He co-chairs a legislative leadership program for CSG’s Midwest region, and he co-chairs CSG’s national Health Public Policy Committee.

Active in the community, Rep. Clere volunteers with a number of organizations, including as a member of the board of the Cardinal Ritter Birthplace Foundation, Indiana Landmarks, the Indiana Minority Health Coalition and the YMCA of Southern Indiana. Rep. Clere is co-chair of the Indiana Skills2Compete Coalition. In addition, he coaches youth soccer.
Rep. Clere is a graduate of Indiana University. He has worked as a Realtor since 2001.
